Samuel Woolley, an assistant professor in the School of Journalism at the University of Texas, will discuss his new book, The Reality Game: How the Next Wave of Technology Will Break the Truth. Woolley explains how human-like automated voice systems, machine learning, “deepfake” AI-edited videos and images, interactive memes, and virtual reality have the power not just to manipulate our politics, but to make us doubt our eyes, ears, and even feelings. He argues for a new culture of innovation built around accountability and transparency.
The event is sponsored by the Media Ethics Initiative, part of the Center for Media Engagement at UT.
